Born October 10, 1912 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Graduated from East High (Denver, Colo.) in 1931. After graduation, worked for the J.S. Brown Mercantile Company and for Western Beauty Supply. In 1940, began work with Gates Rubber Company. Enlisted in the Army January 8, 1944 and joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Swift, Texas.
